The very rich hours of the Court of China is an outstanding exhibition held until July 24 to the Guimet Museum (01.56.52.53.00). After tiresome series of large international events devoted to the Warriors of terra cotta and other funerary arts, here finally is an operation which highlights the cultural finesse of the Middle Kingdom. There are various materials, porcelain or long rolls of silk, masterpieces of painting to the three emperors of the dynasty of Qing (between 1662 and 1796). The vast majority of the parts belong to the permanent collection of the Musée Guimet but is rarely shown, because of an extreme fragility. It is precisely this preservation to abuse of light that the new long rolls of painted silk (between 9 and 16 metres) touting the highlights of the Emperor in travel across its vast territory, are in a State of conservation out of the ordinary. The more subtle has been made for Kangxi (1662-1723). The Emperor appears only once during this epic on silk where the meetings take place. It is recognizable by the yellow dice (Imperial color) that encloses it. For the Viewer, the painting can evoke a series of judgments on image of a historical film. The details of the narrative are carved: expression of a warrior or a baby, small stories of peasants... The story also, with the Organization of the military in space, horses and infantry advance... The aesthetics of the narrative, since the design formed by troops in the landscape to colors of clothing points, is very careful. The framework of landscapes represented in a poetic form, it is in China a discipline in its own right. The trees, the mountains, the waves of the sea are treated in a style that the Western eye could be regarded today as modern. Finally, the painters of the time already use perspective to show houses to open walls, which open courses, open onto gardens... It plunge views of bias that expand the illusion of space. There are the same type of connection, but this time, on a vase decorated with a mountain landscape designed during the reign of Kangxi. A composition in tones of yellow chick and Greens which extends as a film travelling height.
The words of the exhibition, clear, was imagined by the Guimet curator, Marie-Catherine Rey. Not to be missed.
